“Carnival in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night: Delirium in Illyria”
Professor Wayne A. Rebhorn
(The University of Texas in Austin)
May 17th (Thurs) 5:00 – 6:30 PM (J309)
Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night has long been associated with the festive activities that go on in carnival: drinking and eating; games and contests; singing and dancing; disguisings and masquerade; the satire of authority; and so on. In this lecture, Professor Wayne Rebhorn explores the twin plots within Twelfth Night. Tracing a series of motifs within the carnivalesque main plot and the less obvious clown plot, Professor Rebhorn’s examinations of spinning, delirium, and vertigo reveal the confusion, the exaltation, the inebriation, the loss of control, and the release from restrictions and rules that are generally at the center of the experience of carnival, and specifically performed by practically all characters in Twelfth Night.
